People must be familiar with the history of drug and alcohol rehab to know and understand well the various programs offered by it. According to the history, there are two major rehabilitation programs which play an indispensable role in encouraging the people to be rehabilitated. These are programs are Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcanon.

The Start of Alcoholics Anonymous

It is surprising to know that Alcoholic Anonymous drug and alcohol rehab was started by two Alcoholics. They were addicts and facing the problem of dependency on drugs and they were unable to leave the habit. Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith these two were the first men who started the self help program inspired by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung and the teachings from the Oxford Group a Christian Evangelical organization. At first Bill Wilson sought the treatment and when he found success in his endeavor he felt it easy to spread his experience among the addicted people. During their fight against addiction Dr. Bob Smith had come in touch of Wilson and both started the self help group in 1935. By 1937 this group had 40 rehabilitators. The program Alcoholic Anonymous had got such a great success in rehabilitation that other people and organization such as Narcotics Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous and many others started getting inspiration from them.

Narcanon’s Roots

“The Fundamentals of Thought” delivered to the Prisoners of Arizona State was the main source of inspiration for the emerging Narconon. William C. Benitez was then the inmate at Arizona State Prison accused of narcotics offenses. Getting inspiration from this speech delivered by Ron Hubbard to the prisoners on February 19, 1966, he started the Narcanon drug and alcohol rehab program. Later his work was supported by the founder of Scientology. But after some time, they received much criticism for their non affordable fees and other conspiracy.

Other Programs

It is not that AA and Narconon were the first to start this type of drug and alcohol rehab, no doubt the problem of addiction has been for ages, so certainly these would not be the first to start this type of rehabilitation challenge. It has been seen over a period of time that Freud, Jung, Adler and many others have used the principles of AA in most treatment programs. Among all these types of program, perhaps the most effective and popular one was Integrative Therapies. This includes the utilization of various types of therapies all rolled into one. The need of drug and alcohol rehab has swelled over the time with the increasing number of addicts in the world.

Thus, the history of drug and alcohol rehab makes it quite obvious to everyone as to how it became a need to people living in a society
